Val Grande crossing: Malesco-Colloro

Val Grande crossing: Malesco-Colloro

Exploring the majestic Val Grande, from Malesco Colloro, constitutes an enterprising adventure that enchants the hearts of nature and adventure lovers

Informazioni aggiuntive

Although there are no dangerous passages, the crossing requires expert knowledge of the trails. Participating in this two-day excursion with a guide is the best way to experience this adventure in peace while having fun.

Reaching the pinnacle of this adventure in a single day is a challenge that the most daring trained hikers are capable of. However, wisdom suggests embracing the rhythm of nature and breaking the journey into two days. An oasis of rest rises halfway: the “In la Piana” bivouac, a cozy retreat that invites you to soak in the charms of the surroundings and that we will take advantage of to bivouac in total harmony and adventure.

This tactical break not only alleviates fatigue but also amplifies the experience, allowing us to fully savor the incredible diversity of this breathtaking park.

Tackling the Malesco-Colloro traverse in two days offers the opportunity to merge with the natural environment, to catch the whispers of the wind among the ancient trees, and to lose yourself in the wild depths of the Alps. Thus, by immersing yourself in this pristine realm, you will experience two unforgettable days connected to the very essence of the nature.

Schedule

Meeting in Val Loana parking (Malesco) at 8:00 am after leaving a car at the arrival point (Colloro, Premosello Chiovenda) and start of the trek.

Day one: 10 km, 700 metres of ascent and 1000 metres of descent, actual walking time 5 hours if you keep to the average time calculated at a conventional speed, to which must be added the breaks we will take to drink, eat and take some photos. Packed lunch around 12 o'clock and self-managed dinner at the In la Piana bivouac with overnight stay in a bivouac equipped with a wood stove and a few pots for cooking.

Dinner will be as you wish, we can agree to cook pasta or soup or you can bring whatever you prefer (with sandwiches, cheese, cold cuts, fruit).

For breakfast we recommend: tea, instant coffee, jam, biscuits, cereals, hazelnuts, almonds.

Second day: 12 km, 1100 metres of ascent and 1300 metres of descent effective walking time 5.5 hours if we respect the average time calculated at a conventional speed, to these must be added the breaks we will take to drink, eat and take some photos.

Arrival at the cars by estimated 3.30pm. We will use at least 2-3 cars to be able to easily retrieve the car left at the start: the drive Colloro-Malesco-Colloro is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes in total.

Return by 7pm.

Water reserve: there are several water points both along the route and near where we will be sleeping, so it is sufficient to leave with 1/1.5 litres in your rucksack. All water points have spring water and are therefore drinkable.

Temperatures: during the day if it is sunny there could be as much as 20°c, while at night we will be inside a hut heated with a wood-burning stove (it should be borne in mind that in some cases there may be a shortage of firewood) and with a sleeping bag with a capacity of 8-12°c there will be no problems with cold, possibly wearing a jacket for those who feel cold during the night.

BACK PACK LOAD: it is not necessary to carry too much stuff, it is important to have a rucksack that does not exceed 15% fo your weight. For clothes, it is advisable to dress in layers: 2 vests (merino are perfect, one for the day and one for the evening and the next day), 1 fleece/pile, 1 down jacket, 1 shell jacket, 2 pairs of socks, gloves (read the full list at the bottom of the page).

BACKPACK PREPARATION: as we will be moving in some cases over delicate terrain (slippery rocks, exposed passages) it is recommended not to hang anything outside of it, everything must be placed inside or in any case the objects that you plan to place on the outside must adhere perfectly to its surface to prevent them from getting caught and causing you to become unbalanced. It is also recommended that everything be insulated using plastic bags. Another very useful suggestion is to equip oneself with a camel bag in order to keep one's hands free at all times.
