Skitouring Marocco

Skitouring Marocco

Ski mountaineering trip to Morocco, in the High Atlas area, in the presence of 4000m peaks. Adventure guaranteed, in these wild areas!

Informazioni aggiuntive

The High Atlas area in Morocco lends itself to interesting and wild ski mountaineering itineraries. The environment is special, so close to the ocean and the sandy areas of this African land.

In seven days, we will have the opportunity both to ski North Africa's highest peaks over 4000m and to get to know the millenary Maghreb Arab culture. In just a few hours' drive we will pass from chaotic Marrakech in a desert environment to the green valleys of the Atlas Mountains.

The village of Imlil, about 2 hours from the airport, will be our departure base. Climbing to the Toubkal refuge at 3200m is like taking part in a small expedition. Having to stay a few days in the hut and considering that the snow level is usually around 2600/2800m, we will load all our equipment onto mules, allowing us to climb lightly.

Mount Toubkal 4167m is the highest peak in the Atlas and in all of North Africa, and the highest point of our tour.

Schedule

  • Day 1: Arrive to Marrakech Airport, and transfer to Imlil valley 1740m.

We start with a 1H30 drive from Marrakech airport to the small village of Imlil. We will stay overnight in a traditional Imlil Guesthouse. There will be a very short briefing before you start ski trek.

  • Day 2: Imlil – Tizi n’Tamatert – Tachedirt – Bouigenouane. We set out from Imlil to cross the Tamatert Pass (2300m) before dropping down to the Imenane valley, ready for the ascent of Bouygunouane (3800m). From here we have splendid views before we descend 1400m to our gite in Tachdirt village (2400m) where we spend the night.

  • Day 3: Tachdirth– Tizi n'Likemt Pass – Imlil

Early in the morning we set off for the Likemt Pass (3600 m) – a 3-4 hour climb – followed by a final exhilarating descent of 2-3 hours (1200 m) back towards Imlil where you will overnight at a guesthouse.

  • Day 4: Imlil – Sidi Chamharouch – Toubkal Refuge. After breakfast we meet our guides and mules. Once we’ve finished a short briefing and loading our kit, we’ll set off for a 6 hour hike to base camp- a small refuge below the summit. This is a baptism of fire for some, as the track is quite steep and narrow in places, but the views are amazing. We will climb over several mountain passes to reach Neltner Refuge where we will experience our guides exceptional cooking. Once we’re all suitably stuffed we will get our heads down for the night.

  • Day 5: Refuge – Ouankrim 4045 m – Refuge. Today you will ascending the pretty peak of Ouankrim (4045 m), walking through Wagane to the pass .From there a great climbing section to the top offering stunning views of atlas peaks. A skiing course along the valley down to the refuge. Overnight at the refuge. 5h ( climb and ski)

  • Day 6: Refuge – Toubkal Summit 4167 m – Refuge. We wake up early to the smell of breakfast and, after taking on some food and caffeine, we set off. We will take it slow on the ascent as some of us will be feeling the effects of altitude and we want to ensure that everyone makes it to the summit. The track twists and turns as we walk for a few hours to the summit. On the summit the views are breathtaking. The feeling of achievement coupled with the amazing scenery makes this a fantastic part of the trip. Once everyone has taken in the view we will head back on skis down to Neltner Refuge for a well earned meal and a nice hot cup of tea! Overnight at the Refuge. 5or 6h (climb and ski)

  • Day 7: Refuge – another summit – Refuge – Imlil – Marrakech. Overnight at a hotel.

  • Day 8: Visit to Marrakech and return flight in the afternoon.
